THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM
It's All about Balance.
Humans have been using cannabis for its beneficial health properties for thousands of years. Have you ever wondered why it is that cannabis affects people the way it does? How is it possible that a plant can provide relief from so many different conditions?
Until about 60 years ago, no one knew the answer to those questions. Then, researchers isolated the main molecules in the cannabis plant, THC and CBD. It was the first step in the eventual discovery of the endocannabinoid system.
In the 90's, scientists discovered a system of receptors in our cells that were the favourite binding site of THC and CBD molecules in cannabis. These receptors are found in very high concentrations in our brain and immune system.
This begs the question, why do we have cannabinoid receptors the first place? That was answered in 1992 when it was discovered that the body creates molecules that look and function very similarly to THC and CBD. The molecules in cannabis mirror the molecules our bodies make and that's why it's so effective.
The endocannabinoid system is all about balance. Among a host of other things, it helps regulate how you relax, sleep and eat. Think about that. Are you relaxing? Eating and sleeping well? Are you anxious or depressed? Cannabis helps with all that. It's also got you covered if you are dealing with pain, inflammatory reactions, immune function, metabolism control ... the list goes on and on. Our body is literally set up to reap the benefits of cannabis!
I think Dr. Bonnie Goldstein says it best in her book, Cannabis Revealed:
"When your endocannabinoid system is not working properly, you may have an imbalance, which can manifest as a medical condition. There are no pharmaceutical medications that can directly address an endocannabinoid dysfunction. The cannabis plant is a natural medicine that can help balance the endocannabinoid system for a number of medical conditions."
Research into the health benefits of cannabis is ramping up at a wild pace and the findings are incredible. This plant is truly life-changing.
